Situated on the right bank of the Seine, at the heart of a dodecagonal layout of twelve radiating avenues, it was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon in 1806 following his victory at Austerlitz, during the height of his success. The construction of the foundations took two years, and in 1810, as Napoleon entered Paris from the west with his new bride, Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria, a wooden replica of the finished arch was erected.
